Terms 1-5

1) 1. David Walker

a. Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World (76 pg anti-slavery pamphlet)

b. Outspoken Abolitionist

c. Believed that black Americans were more American than Africans because worked hard in the country

d. Argued that American slavery was more brutal than all other types

e. Grew up a free slave but grew to hate slavery

2) 2. Nat Turner

a. American slave- led a slave rebellion in VA based on a sign from a solar eclipse

i. 60 white and 100 black deaths

1. Largest # of fatalities in 1 uprising before the Civil War in the Southern US

ii. Convicted and hanged

iii. Result of rebellion:

1. VA executed 56 blacks accused of being part of Turner's slave rebellion

2. Two hundred blacks were killed by white militias

3. state legislators passed new laws prohibiting/ restricting rights of slaves and free blacks

3) 3. American Colonization Society

a. Founded in 1816

b. Paul Cuffee was an early supporter of settling free blacks in Africa, so set a tone for ACS

c. Wanted to “emancipate and settle the former slaves in Monrovia, Liberia”

i. Monrovia= only foreign capital to be named after US President

ii. Not very successful because only 12,000 slaves left

iii. Founded by Henry Clay, John Randolph, and Richard Bland Lee

4) 4. William Lloyd Garrison

a. Founded and published The Liberator

b. “wanted in immediate and uncompensated emancipation”

c. Founded New England Anti-Slavery Society in 1832

5) 5. Grimke Sisters

a. Fought for abolition and women’s rights

b. Goal: to strengthen legal position of women

c. Angelina Grimke~ first woman to address a Legislative body (marries Theodore Weld)

d. Sarah Grimke~ wrote “Letters on the Condition of Women and Equality of the Sexes”
